Utah Senator discusses sports betting08/28/2018 – update
Utah Senator Orrin Hatch will soon introduce a new sports betting bill that would attempt regulation of the industry. The bill will provide protection to different segments of the sports betting industry. Hatch said late last week that “Parts of the legislation are improvements in monitoring and enforcement that will benefit all stakeholders, sportsbooks, regulators, governing bodies and consumers”.
In 1992 Hatch was in favor of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which was overturned by the Supreme Court this past May. Hatch is looking to impact the sports betting discussions by introducing a bill, before his 2019 retirement that would have major restrains, instead of highlighting the benefits. Congress stops its activities on September 3rd, since a break is necessary before midterm elections. Congress will have some time to discuss its final issues after the elections.
